If you’re considering ways to tighten your skin and prevent unwanted wrinkles, there are a few non-invasive procedures available for you. The two most common procedures are Thermage and Pelleve which we’ll talk about today. First, let’s acknowledge what exactly these treatments can do.
Most non-invasive skin tightening procedures treat areas with small wrinkles and areas where the skin is lax such as around the eyes, around the mouth, forehead, and jawline. Although they can provide substantial improvement, they won’t overhaul a face like surgical procedures can do. Think of a non-invasive treatment as maintenance to prevent or prolong the need for surgery.
Thermage or Pelleve
Thermage and Pelleve are two ways to tighten the skin and reduce noticeable wrinkles. Pelleve uses a unipolar hand piece, while Thermage uses a bipolar hand piece. Both transmit an radiofrequency current designed to heat the under layers of your skin. As the heat builds it causes a reaction to trigger the production of new collagen. The new collagen then fills out and tightens the skin to reduce the sight of wrinkles. There are several differences between the two procedures. However, the two that will most noticeably affect you are time and pain.
Thermage typically takes over and hour to complete and, most importantly, can be a very uncomfortable procedure. Thermage rapidly heats the skin with a strong burst of radio frequency to a very high temperature. Although medical advances have been taken to make Thermage less uncomfortable, the patient may still experience some pain. However, the most recent models of
Thermage no longer require sedation or post-treatment, pain-alleviating medication. (If selecting a provider for your
Thermage treatment, we encourage you to assess how up-to-date the machine is.) After the procedure there is about 30 minutes where the skin is red and swollen but otherwise limited downtime.
Pelleve on the other hand takes about half the time of
Thermage. As well, the clinician uses a circular motion that treats each area several times rather than one hot burst, the procedure is much less painful. There is limited discomfort with no need for any sort of medication or injection. After the treatment, the skin has mild inflammation that causes the skin to look plumper and refreshed. There may be a slight pink hue to the treated areas for at least 30 minutes. Many patients say that a
Pelleve treatment feels like a warm facial massage. Skin tightening using
Thermage is complete normally after 1 to 2 sessions with consultations after 3 months to approve effectiveness. Although
Pelleve is usually 2-3 sessions, the time of each equals out as
Pelleve is a much shorter procedure. Both do not show immediate changes, the collagen takes a period of 3-6 months to fully develop and show its effect. If you’re interested in a non-invasive procedure to tighten your skin it is best to schedule a consultation about which will be best for you.
