Can You Put Hyaluronic Acid on Lips or Wrinkled Skin?
Hyaluronic acid is nature’s answer to lips and wrinkled skin. Once we hit a certain age, we’re all familiar with the inevitable signs of aging: sagging skin, deep lines, thinning lips; the list goes on. Getting older is not fun! Thankfully, nature has provided us with a substance that can take years off of our faces. This natural fountain of youth is called hyaluronic acid.
What Exactly is Hyaluronic Acid?
While you can’t drink hyaluronic acid and become instantly younger, this natural substance is still probably the closest thing to the fountain of youth that we have come across. Hyaluronic acid is found in all species, primarily in the eyes and joints.
What makes it special is that it is highly attracted to water and can bind to it. This allows hyaluronic acid to lubricate parts of the body that move, and has led to it becoming one of the most highly researched substances in the medical and cosmetic field. It also acts as nature’s moisturizer, keeping your skin soft, supple and hydrated. Unfortunately, as we get older, we don’t produce as much of this heavenly stuff, leading to wrinkles, dry skin and sagging.
So How Does It Make You Look Younger?
Those of us in the cosmetics field use hyaluronic acid a little differently than you may think we do. We use it to physically fill in wrinkles and lips with the water that’s attracted by it. The result is a soft and supple improvement that looks natural, because it is natural. Hyaluronic acid also helps to hydrate the skin and trigger the production of more collagen (the stuff that keeps your skin strong and helps it repair itself), resulting in long-lasting youthful-looking skin.
Sounds great in theory. But does it actually work? The answer is yes, and we’ve got the research to prove it.
A 2008 review in The Archives of Dermatology found that the injection of hyaluronic acid is clinically effective in fighting off old age. It was found to visibly increase collagen production after just one month, and the benefits lasted for about six. Topical hyaluronic acid has also proven to be effective. A study published in The Journal of Drugs in Dermatology concluded that topical application of hyaluronic acid formulas led to significant improvement in skin hydration and elasticity and significantly reduced wrinkle depth. Now you can see why this substance is so big in the cosmetic world.
What Cosmetic Treatments and Products Use Hyaluronic Acid?
Now, can you put Hyaluronic Acid on lips or any wrinkled skin? Now that you know that hyaluronic acid can improve your wrinkles and plump your lips, here are the ways you can actually use it. The two most common ways hyaluronic acid can get to your skin is through injectable fillers and topical solutions.
Two extremely effective and popular fillers that hyaluronic acid can be replaced by your body are Restylane and Juvederm.
Restylane was the first stabilized hyaluronic acid filler to hit the market, making it a game changer in the cosmetics industry. It fills in wrinkles, promotes collagen production for long-lasting youthful skin and can plump your lips, making you look younger all around. Best of all, its effects can last up to 8 months after one single treatment. There’s also minimal downtime, so you can get right back to your daily activities after the treatment.
Juvederm uses hyaluronic acid to improve deep facial wrinkles, folds and lines, enhance the lips and improve the shape of your facial features, like your chin and cheeks. The treatment time is shorter than your lunch break, taking as little as 5 to 30 minutes to complete before you can put your makeup back on and head back to work. This short treatment can result in a minimum of 6 months of younger-looking skin and a fuller facial appearance.
