Broken capillaries appear as thin red or pink lines beneath the skin’s surface. They will often appear on the face around the nose or cheek area. Broken capillaries are created when the walls of the capillary widen and/ or narrow too quickly, ripping the muscle inside the capillary wall. When the blood begins to seep from the capillary, it is visible on the surface as a broken capillary.
When skin is dry or sensitive it is often thinner and provides less protection, so broken capiallaries are more common for thinning skin types. Change in climate, sunburn, windburn, and pressure on the face can all cause broken capillaries. Also, as we age, the cells around our capillaries tend to become more fragile, making us more susceptible to broken capillaries.
