What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins typically appear as small, superficial clusters of red or blue veins. They are most commonly found on the thighs, ankles and feet. The tiny spider veins found on the legs feed into progressively larger veins until reaching the deeper vessels that return blood back to your heart.
What Causes Spider Veins?
Spider veins can occur at any age, but most commonly affect women in their childbearing years and older individuals. Genetics, hormonal changes and pregnancy are also risk factors. Other common causes include a reported history of trauma along the affected area or a history prolonged standing or sitting. Other serious medical conditions can be the underlying cause; therefore you should discuss your concerns with your doctor.
How Can Spider Veins Be Treated?
Laser treatments are an excellent option for the majority of individuals concerned with the appearance of spider veins. During treatment, the laser delivers bursts of light through the skin to target the vein. Over time, the vein slowly fades and disappears. A treatment takes approximately 15-30 minutes to perform, and a a series of 2-5 treatments is typically recommended for optimal results. Following your treatment, you may notice redness or swelling along the treated areas that resolves in a few days. You can return to your normal activity immediately following your treatment. This procedure is safe with a quick recovery time. Call our office to learn more about spider vein treatment.
